Illness treatment in case of access to ER

With a message issued on March 9, 2018, INPS offered clarifications for situations in which an employee is held at the ER for a night for diagnostic procedures or when access to the proper department is not immediately possible. For INPS, cases of overnight stay are to be considered as hospitalization.

Therefore, in said cases, the employee must request a certificate of hospitalization.

An electronic certificate is instead issued if access to the ER is resolved without the need, for the employee, to remain overnight.

Where the electronic submission of illness certificate isn’t possible, the hard copy of the certificate must contain an explicit reference to the employee’s inability to work; a “clinical prognosis” is not sufficient and a “prognosis related to work inability” must be specified.
